This weekend was as much about attrition as softball. With Rosey still out with the broken wrist (a soccer injury), and Caitlyn and Maria having family obligations, even with Crislyn subbing we had just one extra player. Emily showed up feeling pretty sick and Mary got hit in the ear with a throw during warmups. Then the games started, and more things happened. Emily could not continue and had to leave after a few innings, so we were down to nine player. Jessica got jammed hand applying a tag (twice) Callan got spiked at a play at home, Kelly took a hard foul ball off her arm, Mary got drilled in the hip with a hard pitch and Crislyn started compaining of a bad headache. But the real culprit in the MOGAA game was the unually warm weather that had us looking for ways to converve energy. Unfortunately those ways turned out to be things like not taking the extra steps necessary to back up throws, and we were done in by a lot of free bases. Lauren pitched well, striking out 7 in the first 3 innings and only allowing one hit - and that runner was easily thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double, Haley to Jessica. Ellie and KJ combined to catch a pop up (I'm still not sure who grabbed it)./ We mounted a two out rally in the bottom of the 5th to get 3 runs, but it was too late to catch up.
In the second game we got adjusted to the heat and played much better. The Snowcats had beaten us 11 - 1 in the Fall Fever, but Jessica kept them off balance with a great mixture of pitches. The defensive play of the game came in cutting a runner down at the plate on a play from Mary in right to Lauren at short to Callan behind the plate. We had the tying run on base in both the 3rd and 4th innings, but couldn't get the timely hit. (Coach Jim has to take some of the blame since their starting pitcher, Jessica, is one of his winter pitching students). At least the apple crisp and ice cream was good.
Pitchers practice 6 - 7:30 every Monday at WJH and 6:30 - 7:30 at HHS with Melissa
